Agent Zee meets Nonny

Today I’m interviewing Nonhlanhla (Nonny) Vilakazi, who is doing a PhD in PalaeoHerpetology! What on earth is PalaeoHerpetology?!!

How old are you Nonny?

I’m in my late 20s LOL

What degree are you studying?
I’m doing a PhD in PalaeoHerpetology at the University of the Witwatersrand

What on earth is a Palaeo Herpetologist??
A palaeo herp is a Scientist dealing with fossil reptiles; I deal with old bones or reptiles that lived a long time ago; millions of years ago.
I look @ snake vertebrae, and lizard jaws. Reptiles are indicator species; they prefer specific environments. So, my reptiles are from the Cradle of Humankind; Coopers Cave. They will tell us about the palaeo-environment of the Cradle a few Millions of Years Ago!

Where did you go to high school/ secondary school?
St. Matthews Private Secondary School

What is your life background?
I’m from the dusty streets of Soweto, Mofolo Central to be exact. Have always loved Science, and wanted to be a medical doctor. Attended a Catholic School until Matric. Started doing my BSc at Wits University, and it was during my Masters 1st year that I had to go for ukuthwasa. We always knew that I had a calling but thought that I’ll have to finish school first before pursuing this calling. Unfortunately I had to go in 2006 for the initiation. I finished the same year, and still attended. I’m now a qualified Sangoma and practise every evening when I get home and on weekends. I’m also a full-time PhD student at Wits University. It’s a hectic life, but I’m used to it.

So Nonny, when did you first get inspired/ decide to study Science/Technology/Engineering/Maths?
I’ve always loved Science. So, when I started at Wits, I wanted to become a doctor, but somebody advised me to start with a BSc. It was during my third year that I got to meet Dr. Lucinda Backwell, who is a Palaeo-Anthropologist. She was so passionate about this subject, and it made me curious and interested.

I am sure there have been obstacles along the way for you especially as a woman in science, would you mind mentioning a few?
Science is dominated by men, and so it’s never easy to get your opinions or findings across. You fight with your supervisors because your results are not what they expected. That’s the biggest obstacle I must say.

What REALLY excites you about your chosen career? What gets Nonhlanhla out of bed in the morning?

Knowing that there’s a possibility of finding a new fossil; adding a piece to the puzzle gets me going every morning. Knowing that there are a few women in Science and young girls are looking up to me is just a bonus.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years and what is your vision for your career?
After obtaining my PhD, I’ll be working towards Professorship. I’d really like to be one of the top women researchers in Science. I see myself giving back to the community by teaching youngsters about Science, and that you don’t have to be old and grumpy to become a Scientist…LOL
I love doing research; don’t see myself doing the same thing for the rest of my life. So, I’ll still be doing research in the next five years; adding pieces to the puzzle!!

Any advice for other young girls/ women who are wanting to study Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths?

You must be passionate about Science in order for you to survive. Always remember that you don’t have to be male and old in order for you to become a Scientist…If I managed to do it; so can you!!!
My motto: if at first you don’t succeed; dust yourself up and try again!!!!!

Besides Nonhlanhla Vilakazi, who is your favourite woman in science and why LOL?
I have three….sorry!!!!!
Dr Lucinda Backwell, I’m where I am because of her. She is my inspiration; she’s managed to do very well for herself against all odds (Since Science is mostly dominated by males)
Prof. Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, and that’s because she’s so young but already a Professor. She’s humble as ever…a bonus
Prof. Mamokgethi Setati; I love this woman, she is my inspiration. She’s Black, from a township, and a professor at her age!! She is my role model

And your favourite scientist? Why?

Oooh….difficult question!!!LOL

I have a lot but will only mention two….Prof. Lee Berger!!! He’s such an intelligent yet humble man. He’s one of the best in the world with his cutting edge research. And again, he’s my Supervisor….LOL
Secondly, Dr. Adam Yates…now this guy is intelligent and knows everything!! He’s also my supervisor, and has helped me a lot with my herpetiles!!! You ask him anything, and he knows the answer….so wish I could have his brain….LOL
